Some Vets will tell the owner of a dog with back pain that the dog has a disc problem. Well to specify that situation an MRI needs to be done which is the only test that can assure the owner of a disc problem. This test is very expensive. Very commonly the dog will have subluxation [ bones irritating nerves due to improper movement ]. A Disc problem may exist but is not usually the most common cause.
Having a skilled board certified animal chiropractor evaluate your dog is the best option after a proper vet evaluation minus the MRI. If the chiropractor also feels it may be a disc problem they will suggest an MRI as well, but if the dog is older then chiropractic adjustments along with PT will many times help this dog. The dog will have to be put under for an MRI and this in of itself can kill the dog if he is older.
A trial course of chiropractic is your best option. The adjustments take into account the potential for disc problems so that if it exists no aggravation will occur. Most Vets have no training in chiropractic so they think that the chiropractor will twist the spine and injure the dog, this is simply not true. I have been in practice for 30 years and have adjusted dogs with disc problems as well as people and have extensive education in chiropractic care.

Thunder anxiety/ nervous dogs - chiropractor for dogs south shore boston and dog chiropractor for boston
The story is - we had some rumbles of thunder a few nights ago and Callie did hear them but when we checked her she was lying peacefully on her bed - not digging her bed or the floor, not trembling - she was very calm and there were quite a few rumbles. I have a comfort shirt for her but never had to use it. I was wondering if the adjustments had anything to do with it? Have you heard of this before??

agility dog with back pain / Chiropractor for dogs south shore boston
Agility Dogs are athletes. As an athlete they can have subluxations and sprained muscles. Many times an owner brings the dog to the vet and the first response is pain meds, xray and or mri. This approach is like using a shot gun to kill a mosquito.
If the dog is evaluated by a board certified animal chiropractor a common cause for this issue is as mentioned above... subluxation and muscle strain. A course of adjustments and some rehab exercises often gets the dog back.
Your vet will not typically advise you on chiropractic since they have no training on this form of care.
I make house calls for dogs and would be happy to evaluate your dog, call me at 781-337-1180 to discuss your dogs problem.
Many of the agility dogs i see are adjusted on a routine to keep them healthy and better equipped to manage the course and not get injured.

Many people ask what is chiropractic good for and the answer is nothing and everthing. Wow what does that mean......Chiropractic was founded on the premise that if a vertebrae is subluxated [ not moving correctly and irritating nerves ] then an adjustment will improve the motion and nerve irritation. This alone has and impact on the entire body. Since nerves control everything. So if you have any ailment the body will deal with that ailment more effectively when the nervous system is at its optimum. People who have various issues as well as animals will see these issues improve since their body is fixing itself more effectively.
This is why chiropractic adjustments are so great to have even if you feel great. It is like improving your diet or exercising way before you have a weight problem or are totally out of shape

Back pain in a horse - chiropractor for horses mass and north shore/ south shore mass
3 muscles are responsible for horses having the potential of experiencing back pain. They are the longus/colli ( muscle under neck), iliopsoas ( lumbar spine to hip) and the rectus abdominus ( belly muscle). When these 3 muscles are working correctly they will enable your horse to collect and round up. The top line muscle needs to be relaxed.
All of these muscles are powered by the nerves from the spine , when a subluxation exists ( bone of the spine not moving correctly) then these muscles weaken and the top line gets tight thus creating a hollow back and an inability to collect up / move forward. This will even affect the front limbs from extending forward. All the exercises in the world will not improve the weakened muscles until you have the horse's spine adjusted. Exercises then will improve the movement.

muscle strain in dogs - dog chiropractor mass and south shore boston
Multi
joint muscles are the most common groups to strain. When a dog is doing
sudden bursts such as in agility there is a greater chance for injury.
Eccentric contractions are more prone such as demonstrated when a
agility dog comes off the teeter or dog walk. Gait analysis, muscle
palpation, are key to the diagnosis. The musculotendinous as well as the
teno-osseous regions are most susceptible.
Cross fiber palpation
over the entire muscle and especially the aforementioned areas will show
tenderness if injured. A painful response to specific stretches that
attempt to isolate a muscle will also help.
Your animal chiropractor is well equipped to handle this issue.
Dog muscle strains and injury - chiropractor for dogs mass
Muscle strains are very common in dogs,
especially performance dogs. The extreme bursts of energy such as in
agility can cause this. Eccentric contraction such as going down an
incline ie. off dog walk, or teeter in agility. Muscles that cross two
joints are more susceptible such as some of the hip muscles.
Chiropractors that are board certified in animal chiropractic are very keen to these issues and can usually palpate the injury effectively. Rehab, stretches, and adjustments will speed recovery.

Back Pain and Sciatica - Weymouth Chiropractor Dr Indek
Many times people will have back pain with sciatica and sometimes just sciatica with no back pain. There are many causes. Disc problems, spinal subluxations, and piriformis issues.
The piriformis is a muscle in the pelvis that supports the sacrum, sacroiliac joint and hip. The sciatic nerve passes through this muscle. If Sciatica exists without back pain then the sacroiliac joint may be stuck in movement and the piriformis muscle is tight pressing on the sciatic nerve. Symptoms such as leg pain, inability to walk, and climbing stairs are but a few.
Chiropractic adjustments to the sacroiliac joint and muscle work to the piriformis will solve the problem.
Please call Dr Indek at 781-337-1180 or email at indekchiropracti@gmail.com with any questions or to make an appt.

Back Pain and Bladder problems in Dogs - Dog Chiropractor South Shore Mass and Boston Area
Many times your dog will experience bladder and or intestinal issues that your Vet cannot find a reason for.
The nerves of the low back control the bladder and intestines. When a spinal bone gets stuck in motion it will cause a short circuit to these nerves resulting in a possible over active bladder or intestines. Many times chiropractic adjustments along with moist heat to the affected area will help this problem.
Recently I had a pug with the intestinal issue and their Vet could not determine a cause, they had me come out to the house and after a few visits she was doing better.
Vets do not diagnose spinal movement problems and thus they cannot recognize when this problem occurs.
Please call Dr Bruce at 781-337-1180 or email me at Indekchiropractic@gmail.com

paralysis in cats- chiropractor for cats south shore and cape cod - chiropractor for cats mass
Saddle Thrombosis in Cats - Chiropractic Can help:
As many of you know, saddle thrombosis can occur to cats and commonly causes hind limb paralysis. Recently I had an owner call me whose cat had been diagnosed with saddle thrombosis. Her cat had a right hind limb paralysis. Bob was the cat's name and he was wearing a rubber shoe to protect his paw since it knuckled under. The incident occured 3 weeks prior to my first visit.
I started adjusting Bob and did some myofascial work on his psoas, quad and other hip flexors and extensors. I gave the owner some exercises such as leg traction and repeated passive flexion and extension of the leg.
...
Each visit Bob was improving. Over the course of 3 months Bob now has full use of his leg and is weight bearing. There is a slignt limp to the left.
Stimulating those muscle spindle cells and doing proprioception work will give them a fighting chance.

Sciatica back and leg pain - chiropractor south shore boston weymouth mass
Sciatica is caused by an irritation of the sciatic nerve. This nerve is about the size of your thumb and is formed by 5 nerves from the low back, runs through the buttock muscles and down the legs to the toes.
You have a sciatic nerve for the left leg and right leg.
Causes of sciatic pain can be most commonly subluxation in the spine ( spinal bones that get stuck in motion), disc problems, stenosis and arthritis.
Chiropractic can help all of these causes by adjusting the spine to free up the sciatic nerve along with specific exercises. Your MD will not know how to do this and therefore will only treat your symptoms with pain killers, anti-inflam meds and muscle relaxers. I have lectured to many medical groups and I can tell you that they have had no education when it comes to spinal biomechanics so do not rely on them to treat your sciatica just like you would not rely on a chiropractor to treat organ diseases which your MD is skilled at.
