Today I had a new dog patient whose owner told me the shoulder keeps going out of place, the vet has put it back in at least twice but it does not stay in place. When I arrived i could see this mini poodle was holding its front left leg out and not putting wt on it. After examining the leg I asked if xrays were done and she said no. I advised her to go back to her vet since this may be a congenital shoulder instability that has shown up later in life due to degeneration. The poodle is showing no signs of pain or distress. This Mini poodle was a rescue and was confined to a cage for a long period of time as a puppy so there may even be some issues arising from improper growth and development.

I will see this poodle again after the vet re-evaluates to keep him functional in the upper spine and extremities since there is abnormal wt distribution on the other joints.

Hip dysplasia

Hip Dysplasia is a condition where there is malformation of the coxo-femoral (hip) joint or joint laxity or looseness that permits subluxation (the ball of the femur does not fit into the socket of the pelvis correctly.) With time, the architecture of the acetabulum (the part of the pelvis the femoral head sits in) and the femoral head becomes deformed, and degenerative joint disease develops. This is the most common disorder of the canine hip and the primary cause of hip osteoarthritis. It is most common in large and giant breed dogs and there is a genetic component. A definitive diagnosis requires radiographs. The degree of radiographic changes are not necessarily consistent with the degree of clinical signs (i.e. a dog may act like a puppy and have severe degenerative joint disease, or a dog with mild radiographic changes may be extremely uncomfortable.) Treatment options consist of one or more of the following: surgery, medication, acupuncture, animal chiropractic, Pulsed Signal Therapy (PST), magnetic therapy, and non-weight bearing or weight bearing exercises (swimming, land treadmill, or hydro-treadmill) depending on the clinical signs.

The brain receives three different types of sensory input that help determine the body’s position:

 Simple, Gentle Stretches You Can Complete in Minutes a Day

There are three areas of your dog’s body for which stretching is especially beneficial – the hips, shoulders and back.

The following stretches, done slowly and gently, are well tolerated by most dogs. However, if you don’t feel confident in your ability to do the stretches, consider asking your vet or a small animal chiropractor demonstrate the stretches for you so you can do them at home.

Instructions for most of these stretches have your dog standing, but you can also do them with your dog lying on her side, or in the case of the chest stretch, on her back. The model for the standing stretches, our dog Rosco, was an adult rescue who has never rolled onto his back. Some dogs are very uncomfortable in this position, so if yours is, don’t force the issue. To demonstrate the lying-on-back chest stretch, we used our dog Ada, who we’ve taught from puppyhood to ‘play’ on her back.

Needless to say, if your pet shows any sign of pain during stretching, discontinue the movement and have her seen by your vet as soon as possible.

• Stretching the hip flexors. The hip flexors are muscles that enable your dog to move his legs and hips while walking, trotting or running. To stretch the hip flexors, ask your dog to stand, and grasp a back leg above the knee. Gently and slowly move the leg back straight out behind your dog’s body. When you reach a point of resistance, where further extension will require applying pressure, hold the leg in position for 15 to 30 seconds. Repeat this stretch 2 or 3 times with each back leg.

Dogs need a 10 to 15 min warm up before exercise such as a fast pace walk which will improve flexibility and heat up the muscle. There is no collar bone [clavicle] in your dog so there is an vast range of motion that can occur on the front limbs.
