Dog has Lame front leg -Dog has difficulty jumping - Chiropractor for dogs south shore boston, cape cod, nantucket, boston

This is the "Trap" muscle in a dog. It originates in the neck and entire upper to mid back. It's job is to lift and elevate the front leg as well as draw it forward. Its powered by the spinal accessory nerve from the upper neck. If your dog has issues with jumping this muscle may be involved as well as its power supply. Contact Dr Bruce he will come to your house so your dog is most comfortable. Chiropractic adjustments to the  spine where the muscle originates as well as cold laser to the muscle and some rehab exercises will greatly help your dog. Hip pain and decreased jumping in dogs - dog chiropractor south shore boston, cape cod, boston, nantucket and martha's vineyard

The psoas muscle in your dog stabilizes the spine and hip as well as is used for hip and leg extension. If your dog has a shortened stride on the hind end there may be a iliopsoas strain. Especially if your dog participates in explosive sports such as agility and flyball. Your dog may not want to jump as well.

The psoas muscle is powered by nerves from the lumbar spine so a subluxation in that region will affect the power supply to this muscle.

Chiropractic adjustments, cold laser, massage and some rehab exercises will help your dog.

Arthritis in dog shoulder - dog chiropractor south shore boston, cape cod nantucket, boston, marthas vineyard

Arthritis usually os the result of past injury or age. The chronic inflammation causes abnormal breakdown of joints and bone spur growth in ligaments and tendons which in turn causes more inflammation and breakdown.

The goal is to decrease inflammation and improve movement. Many natural supplements can help inflammation and pain without the use over meds such as rimadyl, traumadol, and the such. The meds can cause kidney and liver damage with long term use so if possible it is best to try the natural supplements

neck pain in dogs - dog chiropractor south shore boston, boston, cape cod, nantucket

The muscles of the dog's neck travel down to the shoulder. Many times dogs with neck pain have a problem in the shoulder as well. As you can also see these muscles tie into a wide area of the neck so often there are subluxations [ spinal bones that are not moving correctly irritating nerves ] within the neck that can cause neck pain. Lets not forget that 60 percent of a dogs wt. is usually on the front end so even if there is a hind end problem it can create a neck issue secondarily.

chiropractor back pain shoulder pain plantar fascitis south shore boston - kinesio tape chiropractor south shore boston

Dr Bruce uses Kinesio Tape for his patients in Weymouth MA indekchiropractic@gmail.com or 781-337-1180

The Technology behind Kinesio Tape

Let's start by looking at the basic function of kinesiology tape. This is not your ordinary athletic tape. Traditionally, athletes or others with muscleinjuries would tape a muscle or joint to restrict motion and prevent further injury. Imagine a strained calf muscle. Old-school taping methods would dictate wrapping tape around the entire lower leg -- calf, shin, tibia, fibula and all -- almost like a mummy. While that would prevent further strain by immobilizing the injured muscle, it would also impede circulation and slow down the body's natural healing process. Kinesiology taping takes the opposite approach, using the tape to open up the muscle and allow full movement. Kinesiology tape is applied on top of an injured or strained area to stabilize it, but care is always taken to ensure that a muscle or tendon is never encircled with a ring of tape. As you move, the tape, skin and connective tissue (or fascia) over the muscle or tendon also move, pulling slightly away from the muscle and creating space for lymphatic fluid to flow around and cleanse the inflamed tissue.
Dr. Kase lists the following as the four major functions of Kinesio Taping. These functions drive the technology behind the tape:
  • Supporting the muscle -- Proper taping improves the muscle's ability to contract even when it's weakened, reduces a feeling of pain and fatigue, and protects the muscle from cramping, over-extension and over-contraction.
  • Removing congestion to the flow of body fluids -- Kinesiology tape improves blood and lymphatic circulation and reduces inflammation and excess chemical buildup in the tissue.
  • Activating the endogenous analgesic system -- "Endogenous" refers to something that is self-originating, and calling something "analgesic" means that it can relieve pain in a conscious person. So, this requirement means that the tape must facilitate the body's own healing mechanisms, a central focus in chiropractic medicine.
  • Correcting joint problems -- The goal is improving range of motion and adjusting misalignments that result from tightened muscles.
To ensure a full range of motion for the wearer, Kinesio Tape is very thin and made with a porous cotton fabric. The fabric lets the skin breathe and has an elasticity comparable to that of the skin and muscles. The sticky side of the tape uses a water-repellant, medical-grade acrylic adhesive that further supports the muscles and connective tissues. In addition, the tape can stay put for three to four days even through sweating and showering, and Kinesio makes a waterproof tape for use on hands and feet [source: Allegro].

Dogs with back pain, lame dogs - dog chiropractor boston, south shore boston

Dogs can have back pain like humans but they are usually very stoic. Signs may be refusal to jump, shorter walks, a roached back [the back is rounded], lameness, head bobbing, and sensitive on petting and grooming.
Most owner will take their dog to the Vet who will rule out other illnesses and if it is the spine they will often jump to disc issues which is really not the most common. As a Animal Chiropractic Instructor, I can tell you this is what Vets tell us when they start the course. The most common cause is Vertebral Subluxation Complex VSC. Vets are not trained to diagnose VSC and thus cannot correct it. Only a certified Animal Chiropractor can help your dog. Certified is important so be sure you check out the American Vet Chiropractic Assoc or the International Vet Chiropractic Assoc to be sure the doctor is certified. Certification is a 215 hour course with a board exam so please ask.
VSC is usually corrected in a few visits and I actually do house calls only so your dog is at the maximum comfort level. Many owners elect to be proactive and have regular chiropractic checkups for their dog to prevent problems, usually once every 4 to 6 weeks.

Dogs with back pain - Chiropractor for dogs with back pain south shore boston, boston, cape cod, nantucket

Dogs have 7 vertebrae in the neck, 13 thoracic, 7 lumbar and 3 sacral. These bones all move in 6 different directions and any combination of those 6. They move dependent on each other, like dominos.

The grey nerves exit out between these vertebrae and can get irritated by poor spinal movement called a subluxation. These nerves control every muscle, organ and tissue in the body so irritation will short circuit these nerves thus changing information entering the spinal cord from these tissues and in turn altering information leaving these nerves as well. Symptoms can be nothing at all or spasm or lameness or organ disfunction or ........ The chiropractic adjustments help the body fix these subuxations and restore normal movement and nerve function.

There are some Vets and Chiropractors that are offering animal chiropractic who are not certified. Please be aware of their education concerning animal chiropractic. It is a specialty and not part of chiropractic school. An untrained doctor can hurt your animal, you and or themselves and thus the law suite would ensue.

Ask what type of education they have concerning animal chiropractic and check one of these two websites to see if they are certified:

Back pain in dogs and horses - dog and horse chiropractor south shore boston cape cod north shore boston nantucket

When your animal has back pain they often present with a roached ( curved ) back. Sometimes abdominal distress can cause this as well, so it is always a good idea to rule out abdominal issues w your vet first.

If there is no abdominal issues the the animal chiropractor is your next choice. Many vets are not trained in spinal biomechanics so the common diagnosis for back problems from your vet will be IVDD ( intervertebral disc disease ). Which is not the common issue. The most common issue is VSC ( vertebral subluxation complex ) . VSC is a vertebrae ( spinal bone ) that is stuck in motion irritating nerves and muscles. Cause of VSC are as simple as 2 animals playing , a slip upon running or walking, poor fitting harness or tack, poor riding position, improper warm up, etc....

The correction of VSC is the chiropractic adjustment along with cold laser and exercises. How many treatments  depends on many factors from age, pre-existing conditions, and performance level of ur animal. Remember that muscles support and move bones and muscles have memory so one adjustment will not change spinal biomechanics instantly most often a series of adjustments are needed. The frequency also varies on many factors but those of you that are familiar with human chiropractic should know that frequency of visits are far less w animals since they respond quickly.

A certified animal chiropractor is a professional that has passed the AVCA or. IVCA exam and that is the only chiropractor that you should use.

lame dog - chiropractor south shore boston for dogs- dog chiropractor boston

This is the carpal bones of the front legs of the dog. There are 8 bones located here and have tremendous stress placed on them during running and jumping. If they get stuck in movement it can cause lameness. Your vet will not typically pick up on this since it is slight and they are not trained to palpate these joints in that fashion. Once your vet has cleared your dog of other issues be sure to contact the animal chiropractor that can adjust this area and correct the movement problem.

Front and or back leg problems in dogs - chiropractor for dogs cape cod, boston, nantucket south shore boston

I treat many performance and family pets, and a very common problem is found in the rear and or front legs.
Dogs typically carry 60 percent of their body wt on the front end so if there is a rear leg problem even more wt goes to the shoulders and neck thus causing secondary issues there.  The pelvis has 2 important joints called the Sacroiliac Joints which allow your dog to walk, run, get up, sit down etc. Commonly these Sacroiliac joints lock up in motion thus inhibiting your dog from easily jumping up or down as well as walking and running. If the right side is locked in motion then the left front leg typically sees the affects since dogs walk and move in a diagonal. The neck aka cervical spine will also be affected since the muscles of the front leg tie into the neck.

Typically your vet will not be able to diagnose this since they are not trained in spinal biomechanics so the usual meds for pain and inflam will be given and the issue goes untreated.

Please call Dr Bruce at 781-337-1180 or email at indekchiropractic@gmail.com

Shoulder pain and injury in dogs- chiropractor for dogs south shore boston, boston cape cod nantucket

The shoulder in your dog has muscles tha tie into the upper back and neck. The shoulder itself is not attached to any bones unlike humans and thus is suspended by muscle. When there is a shoulder or front leg injury and your Vet has diagnosed it as a soft issue injury, this is where the animal chiropractor comes into play. Adjusting the neck, shoulder and upper back along with some exercises that are specific will greatly speed healing along with cold laser.

The longer your dog goes without chiropractic care at this point the greater the potential for bad adaptation habits in the other joints.

Horses with hock problems - chiropractor for horses south of boston northshore boston cape cod nantucket

The hock is the the achilles tendon and heel in humans. The tendon is originating from the calf muscle which is attached to the back of the stifle as well which moves dependent on the pelvis. Some horses get arthritis in the hock from repetitive movement issues in the stifle and pelvis and some just have inflammation of the tendon.

Your vet will inject for pain and inflammation but this will not correct any abnormal biomechanical movements that cause the pain. If your vet is not trained in animal chiropractic then they will not look to these other causes.

Please contact Dr Bruce with any questions. Chiropractic is not a substitute for Vet care but rather augments it.

Back pain in dogs-chiropractor for dogs south shore boston-boston -cape cod

Dogs with back pain will usually round up their back called a "roached" back. They may have sensitivity when petiing or grooming. Dogs will also not like to jump up or down off items around house.
The most vulnerable area of a dogs spine is where the ribs end and the lumbar spine begins.

IVDD stands for intervertebral disc disease, in plain terms.... Slipped disc. IVDD is not as common as subluxation ( vertebrae that lock in movement and pinch nerves). All dogs can have this occur, not just corgies as seen in this picture.
Animal chiropractors are skilled in treating these dogs to help fix the problem, not just medicate for pain. If your Vet has cleared your dog of any organ and or disease issues then please contact an animal chiropractor.

Chiropractor for Dogs on South Shore Boston, Cape Cod, Nantucket, Boston

A common question is does my dog need a chiropractor and or how to know if they need one?

First of all, most Vets are not trained to know when a dog needs to see a chiropractor and I know this since I teach Vets at Options for Animals Chiropractic College.
Dogs that are performance dogs such as Agility and Dock Diving as well as Herding need to see a chiropractor on a maint. basis since these activities demand abnormal series of movements that are done repetitively.
If you dog is older and has arthritis, chiropractic will help keep them moving better and prevent some potential issues that may occur such as disk problems.
If your dog is lame and or has difficulty with any types of motion and the Vet has cleared them of a disease process then an animal chiropractor is essential.
Please contact Dr Bruce at 781-337-1180 or email at indekchiropractic@gmail.com  my website with dog chiropractic video is indekchiropractic.com

The Hunters Bump could be an anatomical abnormality, It could be noticed more if there is a wt lose or muscle loss. It could also be a subluxaion of the Sacroiliac making this bone called the Tuber Sacrale more prominent.

Headaches - chiropractor weymouth mass

Many headaches start at the back of the head and run over the head to just above the eyes. This headache is called a suboccipital headache. The greater occipital nerve is the cause and is "pinched at the top vertebrae in the neck.
Chiropractic adjustments to C1 will magically correct the problem and so often immed remove the headache.

Please call Dr Bruce at 781-337-1180 or email at Indekchiropractic@gmail.com to schedule an appt.

Dogs with difficulty walking - dog chiropractor cape cod, south of boston boston nantucket

As your dog ages they will have difficulty keeping their balance especially on hard wood floors. Often times the hips could be the issue but many times it can be the low back, hocks and or pelvis.
Typically Meds are given for possible pain but the larger issue is faulty biomechanics ( movements within the joints).

Most Vets are not trained in biomechanics of the spine and pelvis, as i have seen when i teach at the animal chiropractic college. Having a certified (AVCA) chiropractor eval ur dog is essential.

Many times chiropractic adjustments, cold laser, proprioceptive exer., and using yoga mats around the house will greatly help. It is also important to keep the claws trimed since this will also alter balance.

Please call Dr Bruce w questions or to schedule a visit at 781-337-1180 or email at Indekchiropractic@gmail.com

back pain in dogs with lameness - chiropractor for dogs south shore boston, boston, cape cod, nantucket

Back pain is often over diagnosed as disc problems in dogs. To know if the disc is really involved an MRI is needed not an xray. That being said, the majority of back issues with dogs is not disc injury but rather subluxation ( locked up spinal bones that are not moving well and irritating nerves and muscles). Typically Meds are given and rest rec.
Many times chiropractic has quickly fixed these subluxations and thus avoiding long use of meds and rest. Cold laser used in conjunction will speed the healing process. I often add exercises to the regime to prevent further problems.

Shoulder problems in dogs as well as Cruciate (aka ACL or CCL) LIgaments - Chiropractor for Dogs south shore mass, boston, nantucket

Dogs carry 60 percent of their body weight on the front legs in a normal situation. If they injure the cruciate ligament then even more weight is transferred to the front legs thus causing a shoulder issue. Many times your vet may not recommend surgery for the cruciate ligament tear. Sometimes surgery is the only option. Either way, the shoulder will be affected as well as the neck. Animal Chiropractic is essential to avoid further complications in the neck and shoulder. Treatment is very gentle as seen in my video on my website home page indekchiropractic.com.

I will also recommend exercises to aid in the healing process. The visit frequency is much less for animals than people since they react so quickly. I only make house calls so you do not need to get your dog to me, I will come to you.

low back disc problems that can cause sciatica Chiropractor Weymouth MA Dr Indek

Not all disc problems cause sciatica and sometimes there is no back pain but only sciatica. Sciatica is misunderstood by most. True sciatica is an electrical shooting and or numbing pain, just having leg pain that is ache like that runs down the leg is not sciatica. The sciatic nerve come from 5 nerves in the low back and come together in the butt to form the sciatic nerve which is large as your thumb and runs down the leg to the toes. Most common cause of low back pain and or sciatica is subluxation (spinal bones that get 'stuck' in movement and can irritate nerves).

Disc problems often do not need an operation and can be fixed with chiropractic and exercises that are specific. Often just resting and taking meds will not fix the problem but rather increase the eventual need for surgery. The disc can be irritated by subluxation and thus give you all the symptoms.

Please call Dr Indek to discuss your case, he has been in practice for 32 years and has a vast degree of experience with low back cases. Most major insurance accepted including medicare.

A roached back can be a sign of subluxation in the dogs spine, as well as disc and or abdominal distress. Have ur Vet check ur dog for abdominal distress as well as your animal chiropractor for spinal related issues.

A roached back looks like an arch in your dog's back. The name roach back was used since the shape looks like the back of a roach, so ur vet will use this term.

Dogs with Disc Problems - Chiropractor for dogs with Disc problem south shore boston, boston, cape cod, nantucket

The disc is made up of the annulus fibrosis [ pink part ] and the inner gel material called the nucleus pulposus [ blue part ]. The annulus is like rings on a tree but instead of wood they are rings of cartilage. The nucleus is gel like material. The annulus can form cracks and allow nucleus gel to ooze and bulge the the annulus outward - called a Bulging Disc, as seen below [ the green part ].
If the nucleus gel moves all the the way out and breaks through the annulus rings, then this is called  a  - Herniated Disc Type 1 - as seen below.

Often times chiropractic adjustments, traction, acupuncture and chinese herbs cal return your dog to an improved state without surgery, as long as it is not herniated out as in Type 1 above. The time factor is important and the sooner your dog is seen the better. Alway consult your vet first then contact the animal chiropractor.

Most Vets will not tell you to bring your dog to a animal chiropractor so please check out my webpage at indekchiropractic.com as well as email me at indekchiropractic@gmail.com.

Cruciate ligament tear in dogs - Chiropractor for dogs that are lame - Chiropractor south shore boston cape cod boston

There are two ligaments that stabilize your dogs knee from front to back, they are called the Cruciate Ligaments. The name comes from the cross that they form within the knee. Some dogs tear these ligaments when they jump up for frisbees and balls. Sometimes surgery is needed so always see your vet first. It is especially important to have these dogs adjusted by the animal chiropractor to keep the compensation stress minimized and to prevent the other knee cruciate from tearing. Physical therapy like underwater treadmill will also help.

problem with shoulder in dog. shoulder pain in dogs- chiropractor for dogs south shore boston, cape cod, nantucket, boston

This muscle is the biceps of the dog. It extends the shoulder and flexes the elbow. The nerve supply to this muscle comes from the lower neck and upper thoracic spine. If your dog has problems in extending the front leg this muscle may be at issue as well as a subluxation in the neck and or upper back. Many agility dogs that I adjust have an issue with weave poles and jumps, sometimes this is the problem.

shoulder pain in dogs - agility dogs -chiropractor for dogs south shore boston and cape cod

I have been adjusting dogs this past weekend at the AKC National Agility Show in Harrisbury PA and have noticed a very common problem that occurs in many agility and non-agility dogs, and that problem is within the scapula of the shoulder.

The scapula referred to the wing by many is plagued with muscle tightness which can be caused by abnormal gait pattern and subluxation of the cervical [neck] and upper thoracic [upper back]. Jumping off a bed, out of a car and doing jumps like in agility can cause this problem.

The fix is to have an animal chiropractor evaluate the region and do some adjustments, cold laser, and give the owner some home remedies in the form of exercises to correct the problem.

hip pain - chiropractor weymouth mass

Hip pain can be caused by this muscle called the TFL. This muscle goes from the pelvis/hip to the outside of the knee. It can cause hip pain, leg pain and or knee pain. Injury to this muscle will also cause the hip and sacroiliac to lock up causing back pain. Improper warm up and or cool down as well as long sitting will strain this muscle.
Chiropractic Adjustments with muscle work and cold laser will help this problem.
Dr Bruce is certified in sports injuries and is the chiropractic director for the boston marathon.
Please call at 781-337-1180 or email at indekchiropractic@gmail.com
This muscle is called the TFL and runs from the pelvic hip area to the outside of your knee. If your hip and or side of the thigh along with your knee bothers you, it may be a TFL issue. Poor movement of the sacroiliac joint in the pelvis can cause this muscle to work incorrectly.
Chiropractic adjustments, muscle work and cold laser therapy will help fix the problem. You may notice pain while going up and down stairs or sitting in the car. The cause can be varied, possibly not exercising and prolonged sitting, improper warm up or cool down post activity.

Dr Bruce is Certified in Sports Injuries and has been the director for the Boston Marathon, and US Triathlon Team as well as an athlete himself. Please call him at 781-337-1180 or email at indekchiropractic@gmail.com

neck problem pain in dogs - Chiropractor for dogs south shore boston- cape cod - boston

Once your Vet has cleared your dog of any illness, it is always a good idea to have a Certified Animal Chiropractor by the American Vet Chiropractic Association evaluate your dog. Chiropractic Adjustments along with exercise and cold laser can often solve the problem.

The cause can be varied but the most common is subluxation of the spine with possible shoulder issues. Sometimes a rear leg and or back problem can cause neck pain as well due to compensation. These are all things that the animal chiropractor is skilled in.

rotator cuff muscle pain and strain - Chiropractor for rotator cuff weymouth mass and south shore

There are 4 muscles that make up the rotator cuff of the shoulder... Supraspinatus, Infraspinatus, Teres Major and Teres Minor. These muscles rotate and lift the shoulder. Putting on a shirt or bra, lifting a child, or just normal activity will hurt. The power supply nerves for these muscles comes from the neck and upper back. Typically people get injections to the shoulder but this does not solve the cause of the problem which can be coming from the neck, upper back, and shoulder joint. The cause is often a movement problem which the injection does not address.
Chiropractic adjustments to the neck and upper back as well as the shoulder along with cold laser and some exercises work wonders.

Shoulder problems in Dogs- Chiropractor for dogs south shore boston, cape cod, boston

These muscles control the shoulder joint. Notice how some of the shoulder muscles tie into the neck and upper back. Chiropractic adjustments, myofascial release and cold laser can dramatically improve the lameness. Often the neck has subluxations, the shoulder is subluxated in a forward [cranial ] position and the upper back has subluxations too.
There is no clavicle or collar bone in a dog so the shoulder is always in motion in a myriad of positions.

dog low back pain - chiropractor for dogs south of boston, boston and cape cod.

The Psoas Muscle 'red highlight' is often involved when your dog experiences low back pain. In performance dogs this muscle if tight will inhibit rear leg extension and lumbar subluxation. Often agility dogs will limit jumping when the Psoas is involved. Cold Laser, Massage, and Chiropractic will often correct this problem and a follow up with exercises will strengthen it as well.

back pain and disc problems chiropractor weymouth mass south shore boston

Back pain can be caused by muscle, spinal joint movement and or disc problems. All 3 of these can usually be helped by a chiropractor.
The most common muscle involved is the Psoas Muscle.

This muscle goes from the front of the spine into the hip and is thus a hip flexor muscle as well as a low back support muscle. Chiropractic adjustments along with cold laser with help fix low back pain.

Front leg lameness- chiropractor for dog boston, south shore boston, cape cod, north shore boston

A dog may have front leg lameness due to a hind end problem, shoulder problem, neck problem, elbow and even toe issues.
When your dog is evaluated I will look at gait pattern, collar and all the above issues. Your vet will eval for dysplasia, thyroid and disc problems most commonly. As an animal chiropractor the evaluation has an emphasis on movement problems that your vet will not address. As an instructor at one of the animal chiropractic colleges, i can tell that this movement analysis does not enter into the vets thought process.
The treatment involves treating the movement problem and giving you the owner exercises to do w your dog.

back pain and neck pain in dogs - chiropractor for dogs south shore boston, cape cod and boston - certified animal chiropractor american vet chiropractic association

If your dog is having back problems and or neck problems your vet has probably put them on meds for pain and muscle relaxation and even possibly nerve pain meds. All of this is well and good but none of it address the cause of your dogs problem. Pain is not a cause but rather a symptom of the most common problem in dogs call Spinal Subluxation Complex.

Spinal Subluxation Complex or VSC is very common but not diagnosed by your vet.  VSC involves spinal joint movement problems as well as nerve irritation which can be complicated by arthritis and or disc problems.

Chiropractic care can fix these subluxations and relieve your dog of pain and suffering. My visits are all house calls so your dog is most comfortable. I use Cold laser along with exercise therapy as well.

Dog with back pain, lameness- dog chiropractor south shore boston, boston cape cod

Dogs experience pain in different ways. Sometimes they pant, pace and or just become lethargic.
Dogs will often continue with normal activity despite pain since this is a survival mode. It is always a good idea to have your Vet check your dog to rule out disease and organ involvement.

If the cause is not a Vet issue then Chiropractic can be the answer. Back pain will be treated w pain meds by your vet, but the animal chiropractor needs to evaluate your dogs spine and nervous system along with all 4 limbs to find the problem. Your Vet is not skilled in finding spinal subluxations that affect the nervous system, and I can say this with confidence since I am an instructor at an Animal Chiropractic College.

When a spinal subluxation exists it can pinch nerves and thus cause pain and lameness. Chiropractic adjustments, exercises and cold laser will often correct the problem.

I make home visits exclusively so that your dog is most comfortable.

Pug with back pain - Dog chiropractor south of boston, cape cod, boston mass

Midge came to us from the Boston City Animal Shelter.  A driver saw her dropped out a car window, pulled over, and waited with her until Animal Control arrived. She didn't seem to be hurt though she seemed like a quiet dog for a barely full-grown puppy.  Pugs usually have "crazy dog" until they're 2 or even 3 years old.  It took Dr. Indek about 2 minutes to adjust her the first time and all of a sudden we had crazy dog!  She ran, she jumped, she played.  The difference was wonderful.  Thank you Dr. Indek

Dogs with disc problems - chiropractor for dogs south shore boston, boston and cape cod

Some dogs are predisposed to disc problems due to their breeding. The disc is just weak in these dogs and prone to tear.
Chiropractic can often help heal the disc along with acupuncture. I have seen many dogs that have fully recovered with the combination of care. It is important to get care ASAP for the best outcome.

luxating patella in a dog - chiropractor for luxating patella in dogs south shore boston, cape cod, boston.- alternative care for luxating patella in dogs

Regular daily walks of 10-15 minutes, or more than that if the dog can tolerate greater length.  Two short walks may be better than one long one if the dog gets sore; if your dog limps, you’ve overdone it.  A steady, maintained walk on the leash (rather than run and stop, run and stop) is excellent therapy because the dog makes use of all four legs symmetrically.·         Going up steps strengthens the quadriceps. Walking uphill and walking on uneven terrain (off the sidewalk) are also good strengtheners.·         Standing on the back feet and “dancing” 5-10 steps for 10-30 seconds, two times a day, helps considerably.·         Going over small obstacles and walking in figure eights or through cones or weave poles will help build strength and flexibility.·         Swimming in a deep tub or Jacuzzi (moderate the temperature to mid-80s) strengthens the muscles without the strain of bearing weight; start with 5 minutes with a goal of 30 minutes.·         Massaging the front of the thigh or holding above the knee and stretching a leg back can help relieve discomfort. Chiropractic adjustments to the pelvis and low back as well as shoulders helps dramatically. How do you know if your dog has a knee problem?  A veterinarian can make the diagnosis, but you may see signs on your own, such as an odd “skip” in the dog’s gait, or “bunny-hopping” to protect the loose knee joint.  The dog may be carrying up to 90% of its weight on the front legs instead of an appropriate 60-70% of its weight on the back legs. In severe cases where the dog is in continual pain, surgery may be warranted. Take care if you know or suspect your dog has knee problems, but if your dog is asymptomatic, don’t limit activity, since exercise is good at warding off problems.  Keeping your dog on the lean side is a good idea, since excess body weight stresses the joints, and it’s also a good idea to give your dog glucosamine supplements to support joint health.

dogs with hip dysplasia and cruciate - knee problems- chiropractor for dogs south shore boston, cape cod, boston

Dogs with hip and or knee conditions need chiropractic adjustments to aid in recovery since the pelvis/sacroiliac joints as well as the front legs will adapt with stress placed on them as the hip and knee recovers.
The chiropractic adjustment will help speed healing and reduce secondary problems that usually occur if there is no chiropractic added to the regime.
When these joints are dysplastic or cruciate injury occurs there is inflammation and pain. Inflammation also affects the immune system as well. Inflammation is part of healing but too much is damaging. Inflammation is regulated by proteins in the body called cytokines. It has been proven that chiropractic adjustments can control cytokine release and thus help mediate the inflammation process and speed healing.

chiropractor for dogs and horses south shore boston, cape cod, boston, north shore boston

The components of subluxation which is the common problem that most dogs and horses have that chiropractic treats. These components are addressed by the animal chiropractor

Kinesiopathology, or the pathology of movement, starts with the initial misalignment of the joint, which is made up of two or more separate bones.  Each and every spinal segment contributes a small portion of the total amount of movement that allows the dog’s back to move.  When one segment is not moving correctly then the segments in front or behind may become hyper mobile in an attempt to maintain normal range of motion.  Hyper mobility leads to degenerative changes and eventually loss of mobility of another segment.   Kinesiopathology restricts the dog’s ability to move in any or all ranges of motion.
Neuropathology is the result of kinesiopathology and problems in the nervous system.  A nerve exits the spinal canal between two vertebras.  If these vertebras are subluxated there may be pain, heat, swelling, muscle spasm and loss of motion in and around the area.
Myopathology includes the tightness and spasms that occur in the muscles supplied by the nerves exiting the vertebral canal between the subluxated vertebra.  This tightness can be isolated to the small muscles that connect one vertebra to the next or it can extend to the long muscles that run along the entire length of the dog’s back.  This tightness can cause pain and weakness in the muscle and may lead to changes in the curve of the dog’s spine.
Connective Tissue Pathology includes the changes that are seen in the tendons, ligaments, and supporting tissues in the area of the subluxation.  Immobilization of these tissues leads to profound degenerative changes in as little as three days.  Cartilage shrinks increasing its susceptibility to damage from minor trauma.  Adhesions start to form which further decreases mobility in the area.  Ligaments start to shorten leading to tightness in the area.
Inflammatory Response includes the swelling, heat, redness, altered function, and pain that are the body’s response to inflammation that results from the subluxation.  This is the most common reason that people seek out chiropractic care for themselves or their dogs.  Nerves surrounding an inflamed area become hyper excitable and they will continue to fire even after stimulus has been removed.  The pain from a subluxation will vary depending on the severity and acuteness of the problem.
