The Technology behind Kinesio Tape

Let's start by looking at the basic function of kinesiology tape. This is not your ordinary athletic tape. Traditionally, athletes or others with muscleinjuries would tape a muscle or joint to restrict motion and prevent further injury. Imagine a strained calf muscle. Old-school taping methods would dictate wrapping tape around the entire lower leg -- calf, shin, tibia, fibula and all -- almost like a mummy. While that would prevent further strain by immobilizing the injured muscle, it would also impede circulation and slow down the body's natural healing process. Kinesiology taping takes the opposite approach, using the tape to open up the muscle and allow full movement. Kinesiology tape is applied on top of an injured or strained area to stabilize it, but care is always taken to ensure that a muscle or tendon is never encircled with a ring of tape. As you move, the tape, skin and connective tissue (or fascia) over the muscle or tendon also move, pulling slightly away from the muscle and creating space for lymphatic fluid to flow around and cleanse the inflamed tissue.
Dr. Kase lists the following as the four major functions of Kinesio Taping. These functions drive the technology behind the tape:
  • Supporting the muscle -- Proper taping improves the muscle's ability to contract even when it's weakened, reduces a feeling of pain and fatigue, and protects the muscle from cramping, over-extension and over-contraction.
  • Removing congestion to the flow of body fluids -- Kinesiology tape improves blood and lymphatic circulation and reduces inflammation and excess chemical buildup in the tissue.
  • Activating the endogenous analgesic system -- "Endogenous" refers to something that is self-originating, and calling something "analgesic" means that it can relieve pain in a conscious person. So, this requirement means that the tape must facilitate the body's own healing mechanisms, a central focus in chiropractic medicine.
  • Correcting joint problems -- The goal is improving range of motion and adjusting misalignments that result from tightened muscles.
To ensure a full range of motion for the wearer, Kinesio Tape is very thin and made with a porous cotton fabric. The fabric lets the skin breathe and has an elasticity comparable to that of the skin and muscles. The sticky side of the tape uses a water-repellant, medical-grade acrylic adhesive that further supports the muscles and connective tissues. In addition, the tape can stay put for three to four days even through sweating and showering, and Kinesio makes a waterproof tape for use on hands and feet [source: Allegro].

Dogs with back pain, lame dogs - dog chiropractor boston, south shore boston

Dogs can have back pain like humans but they are usually very stoic. Signs may be refusal to jump, shorter walks, a roached back [the back is rounded], lameness, head bobbing, and sensitive on petting and grooming.
Most owner will take their dog to the Vet who will rule out other illnesses and if it is the spine they will often jump to disc issues which is really not the most common. As a Animal Chiropractic Instructor, I can tell you this is what Vets tell us when they start the course. The most common cause is Vertebral Subluxation Complex VSC. Vets are not trained to diagnose VSC and thus cannot correct it. Only a certified Animal Chiropractor can help your dog. Certified is important so be sure you check out the American Vet Chiropractic Assoc or the International Vet Chiropractic Assoc to be sure the doctor is certified. Certification is a 215 hour course with a board exam so please ask.
VSC is usually corrected in a few visits and I actually do house calls only so your dog is at the maximum comfort level. Many owners elect to be proactive and have regular chiropractic checkups for their dog to prevent problems, usually once every 4 to 6 weeks.

Dogs with back pain - Chiropractor for dogs with back pain south shore boston, boston, cape cod, nantucket

Dogs have 7 vertebrae in the neck, 13 thoracic, 7 lumbar and 3 sacral. These bones all move in 6 different directions and any combination of those 6. They move dependent on each other, like dominos.

The grey nerves exit out between these vertebrae and can get irritated by poor spinal movement called a subluxation. These nerves control every muscle, organ and tissue in the body so irritation will short circuit these nerves thus changing information entering the spinal cord from these tissues and in turn altering information leaving these nerves as well. Symptoms can be nothing at all or spasm or lameness or organ disfunction or ........ The chiropractic adjustments help the body fix these subuxations and restore normal movement and nerve function.

There are some Vets and Chiropractors that are offering animal chiropractic who are not certified. Please be aware of their education concerning animal chiropractic. It is a specialty and not part of chiropractic school. An untrained doctor can hurt your animal, you and or themselves and thus the law suite would ensue.

Ask what type of education they have concerning animal chiropractic and check one of these two websites to see if they are certified:

Back pain in dogs and horses - dog and horse chiropractor south shore boston cape cod north shore boston nantucket

When your animal has back pain they often present with a roached ( curved ) back. Sometimes abdominal distress can cause this as well, so it is always a good idea to rule out abdominal issues w your vet first.

If there is no abdominal issues the the animal chiropractor is your next choice. Many vets are not trained in spinal biomechanics so the common diagnosis for back problems from your vet will be IVDD ( intervertebral disc disease ). Which is not the common issue. The most common issue is VSC ( vertebral subluxation complex ) . VSC is a vertebrae ( spinal bone ) that is stuck in motion irritating nerves and muscles. Cause of VSC are as simple as 2 animals playing , a slip upon running or walking, poor fitting harness or tack, poor riding position, improper warm up, etc....

The correction of VSC is the chiropractic adjustment along with cold laser and exercises. How many treatments  depends on many factors from age, pre-existing conditions, and performance level of ur animal. Remember that muscles support and move bones and muscles have memory so one adjustment will not change spinal biomechanics instantly most often a series of adjustments are needed. The frequency also varies on many factors but those of you that are familiar with human chiropractic should know that frequency of visits are far less w animals since they respond quickly.

A certified animal chiropractor is a professional that has passed the AVCA or. IVCA exam and that is the only chiropractor that you should use.

lame dog - chiropractor south shore boston for dogs- dog chiropractor boston

This is the carpal bones of the front legs of the dog. There are 8 bones located here and have tremendous stress placed on them during running and jumping. If they get stuck in movement it can cause lameness. Your vet will not typically pick up on this since it is slight and they are not trained to palpate these joints in that fashion. Once your vet has cleared your dog of other issues be sure to contact the animal chiropractor that can adjust this area and correct the movement problem.
